Our driving school offers comprehensive reference materials that guide you through each step of the driver’s licensing process in Nova Scotia, making it easier to navigate your way to becoming a licensed driver.

How to Get Your NS License

Getting a driver’s license in Nova Scotia is a journey that takes you from novice to fully licensed driver through a series of progressive stages. Along the way, you’ll gain valuable experience and build confidence behind the wheel, with each step bringing you closer to the freedom of independent driving. It’s a process designed to ensure that new drivers are fully prepared for the road ahead.

Graduated Drivers License System

Learner’s License (L)

How to get:

Applicants must be at least 16 years old. They must apply for and pass a vision test, then pass a written knowledge test at any Access NS center.

Restrictions:

  • No passengers, except a supervising driver who is not enrolled in the Graduated Driver Licence system.
  • Zero blood alcohol level for the learning driver.

Newly Licensed Driver (N)

How to get:

The minimum practice period with the Learner’s License is 12 months. The practice period can be reduced to a minimum of 9 months if the driver completes a recognized driver education or training program. Suspensions will delay graduation to the newly licensed driver stage by a period of time equal to the minimum practice period. At the end of the practice period, the driver must complete a practical road test with an Access NS officer.

Restrictions:

  • Zero blood alcohol level for the newly licensed driver.
  • Only one front seat passenger and rear seat passengers limited to the number of available seat belts.
  • No upgrade beyond a Class 5 driver’s license.
  • No driving between midnight and 5:00AM, unless exempted from the nightly curfew for employment purposes or the newly licenced driver is accompanied by a supervising driver.

Restricted Individual Stage (R)

How to get:

The driver must be a Newly Licensed driver for a minimum of two years. Licence suspensions will delay graduation to the restricted individual stage by 2 years from the date the licence is reinstated. After 2 years, the driver can visit an Access NS branch to receive the upgrade.

Restrictions:

  • Zero blood alcohol level for the restricted individual.
  • The restricted individual cannot be a supervising driver for another driver.

Fully Licensed Driver (No Restrictions)

How to get:

The driver will remain in the restricted individual stage for 2 years.  At the end of the two year driving period, all restrictions associated with the Graduated Driver Licence system are removed and the driver is considered a fully experienced driver.

Restrictions:

  • No restrictions (other than applicable provincial alcohol limits).
